Niek Koppen (Hengelo, 1956) is documentairemaker en producent van het in 1999 opgerichte Selfmade Films. In 1992 maakt hij zijn debuut als documentairemaker met Siki, in 1995 gevolgd door het met een Gouden Kalf bekroonde De slag in de Javazee. Het zijn films over geheugen en legendevorming, door de verhalen van nog levende getuigen. In zijn films observeert Koppen als een buitenstaander: in The Hunt (1997) is het de Britse vossenjacht, in De keuken van Kok (1998) de verkiezingscampagne van toenmalig premier Wim Kok van de PvdA. Het groepsproces is het thema in zijn latere werk, zoals in Goud (2007), over de Nederlandse dameshockeyploeg voor en tijdens de Wereldkampioenschappen van 2006 in Madrid. In 1992, he made his debut as a documentary maker with Siki, followed in 1995 by The Battle of the Java Sea (1995), which won a Golden Calf award. They are films about memory tand making of legends, told through the stories of surviving witnessess. In his films, Koppen observes as an outsider. In The Hunt (1997), he observes the British fox hunt, and in Working for Labour (1998), his eye is on the election campaign of the prime minister at the time, Wim Kok, of the PvdA party. The group process is the theme of his later works, such as Gold (2007), about the Duch Women’s hockey team before and during the 2006 World Championships in Madrid.
