Dangerous Waters is een game die zich afspeelt in het heden waarin je de controle krijgt over vliegtuigen, schepen en duikboten. Je moet je richten op je bemanning en zeer nauwkeurig gecombineerde aanvallen plannen door middel van een top-down 'Commanders Eye'-perspectief. Je hoeft echter niet je aanvallen te plannen, je kunt dit ook overlaten aan de kunstmatige intelligentie en je meer richten op de sonar, wapensystemen of andere units.<br /><br />Bij je aanvallen heb je tien grote marinevloten onder jouw commando met daarin meer dan 270 units. Alle units bestaan in het echt ook en zijn na te zoeken in de uitgebreide database die is aangeleverd door het U.S. Naval Institute.<br /><br />Naast de dynamische campagnes bevat de game ook een Quick Mission-modus, een multiplayermodus en bovendien een missie-editor. Deze editor is ook gebruikt door de ontwikkelaars zelf en geeft je uitgebreide mogelijkheden om je eigen missies te creëren.
