In Valhalla Hills help jij Vikingen in hun tocht door verschillende werelden naar het hiernamaals. Je zorgt dat de krijgers eten hebben, en kunnen slapen door een nederzetting voor ze te bouwen aan de voet van een berg. Het doel van elke missie is een blauw gloeiend portaal op de top van de berg te bereiken en de ijsmonsters die hieruit voortkomen te verpulveren, zodat jij via het portaal het volgende stapje naar Walhalla kunt nemen.

Voordat het portaal kan worden geopend, heeft je dorpje behoefte aan tientallen bebaarde vechtersbazen die: bomen hakken, brood bakken, stenen verzamelen en andere klusjes opknappen. Valhalla Hills zit daarom vol verschillende gebouwen. Dit uit zich in bijvoorbeeld de verschillende manieren hoe je je onderdanen eten geeft. Stuur je poppetjes met hengels erop uit om vis te vangen, ga je voor een klein konijntje aan het spit, kies je voor de lange maar bevredigende cyclus voor brood, of pluk je een simpel appeltje van een boom? Genoeg variatie dus.

Wat daarbij essentieel is, is rekening houden met de hellingen op de bergen in Valhalla Hills. Bouw je namelijk op een te steil stuk, dan moet je fors extra grondstoffen in je project stoppen om een fundering aan te leggen. Een continue afweging wordt daardoor gemaakt, tussen het besparen van hout en steen of het compact houden van de infrastructuur. Het gevolg is daarnaast dat je nederzetting natuurlijk de 'flow of the land' volgt en eruit ziet alsof het regelrecht uit een Pixar-film komt.
