De inwoners van Los Angeles worden in de holst van de nacht door een mysterieuze lichtstraal door het raam gewekt. De lichtbron trekt, als nachtvlinders naar een vlam, mensen naar buiten voordat zij plotseling in de nevel verdwijnen. Als snel ontdekken zij dat de gehele bevolking door een macht van buitenaardse wezentjes wordt opgeslokt.
